Part of my goal for my mom’s visit was to spend time in some of the nearby towns I’ve heard about. I wanted to know what I should recommend to future visitors. Broc and Gruyères were two of those towns…both less than an hour away from Vevey.
In Broc, we visited Maison Cailler. This is a magical place full of chocolate. Nestlé acquired the Cailler brand over 80 years ago, and Cailler chocolate is still produced in this facility. There is a store full of chocolate, a brief tour about the history of chocolate and Cailler, a walk through the production facility, and then…THE TASTING ROOM!! I seriously think I tried about 17 different pieces of chocolate (which obviously led to a tummy ache later).
[So many chocolate gifts to choose from!]

[“Uh-oh, I think that 17th piece was one too many…”]
After consuming more chocolate than I have in all of 2013, it was time to move on to another Swiss favorite – CHEESE! Next stop: Gruyères…an adorable medieval town and home of the infamous Gruyères cheese since 1115. We strolled through all of the little shops on our way to Chateau Gruyères – the castle at the far end of town.
[Beautiful views from the castle]
After shopping and touring the castle, it was time for some fundue! Thanks to the recommendation of a colleague, we enjoyed some at Le Chalet. It was delicious!
