We spent New Years Eve in Zermatt. What a memorable place to ring in 2014! All of the travel books said to allot at least three days in Zermatt in case of inclement weather. We were only staying one night, so we headed out with fingers and toes crossed that the weather would cooperate. We really wanted to see the Matterhorn! Thankfully, the day we chose was picture perfect! Lots of sunshine and not a cloud in the sky!
The two hour drive from Vevey was spectacular as we weaved through the snowy mountains. We parked the car in Tasch and took the train into Zermatt. There are no cars in Zermatt, but there are quite a few electric vehicles (more like oversized golf carts) zipping through the snow around town. (And boy did they have snow!)
We checked into Hotel Daniela, grabbed a quick lunch, and then headed up to Rothorn Paradise for a view of the Matterhorn. It took an underground funicular, a gondola, and a cable car to make it to the top – 10,184 feet! We enjoyed a hot chocolate while taking in the view!
It’s futile for me to continue blabbering on when the pictures will show you how magnificent it was…
Back in town, we strolled through the shops and had a crêpe for snack at a Stephanie’s Crêperie – a tiny, little store front. Back at the hotel, we thawed out and played some Bananagrams. (I won!)
We had an amazing New Years Eve dinner at Sparky’s. The restaurant was decorated with streamers, and we had a delicious five course dinner. On the way home, we saw lots of fireworks shooting off around town. Sadly, my tummy was so full that I called it a night a few minutes before midnight – falling asleep to the sound of fireworks.
Wishing all of you a happy, healthy 2014 – full of adventures and new experiences!
