My first job out of college was a Sales Rep calling on Walmart stores. I have plenty of stories I could share, but most of them can wait for another day…
As part of my job, I was responsible for checking the supply of candy bars at the checkout on each store call. You know what else you can find at the checkout? Magazines. Specifically, People magazine. More often than not, I found myself buying one. I couldn’t resist. If it wasn’t someone’s wedding, it was someone’s baby. Or Award season with all of the amazing gowns. Or an interview with Julia Roberts. (I love her. Probably more than most, because we share a birthday.)
After a while, I realized it made more financial sense to subscribe. I mean, you save like 75% off the cover price. (I have no idea how much you save, but it seems like the offers are always outrageous.) I kept the subscription until I moved on to my next job and stopped being tempted by the covers every day. Then I was back to buying issues showcasing the Oscar dresses and anything about the Royals.
That was way more than you needed to know, but sometimes (most of the time?) I get carried away…
Today, I was flying out of the Geneva airport, and what did I spy when I was buying a snack?! The annual post-Oscar double issue of People…in English! The real issue, not a European version. Just as if I was in the States, I snagged a copy.
Then I saw it…the price. 12 CHF ($13.62). Mind you, the cover price is $4.99. I hesitated for just a second until I caught myself and thought, “who am I kidding? We all know I’m going to buy it!” It’s the first English magazine I’ve had in 5-6 months! AND it has 45 pages of Oscar!
And just in case all of this excitement wasn’t enough, I found a small bag of Haribo World Mix, which might be the BEST gummy candy of all time! I devoured the candy, but I’m taking my time with the magazine. If it survives the next 11 days of travel, I will probably try to pass it along to the other American females in Vevey to offset the 12 CHF investment.
The longer I’m here, the more I realize it’s the little things that can brighten a day! Especially a Monday!
