I woke up Sunday morning feeling accomplished. Most of the major sites in Barcelona were conquered in the first two days. While I could’ve been really crazy and run to a few more, I opted for the more sane option…to enjoy the day at a relaxed pace. And it was delightful.
There were a few logistical things to figure out at the start of the day – namely, moving my luggage from one point to another, but I managed, and I was waiting for my colleague to pick me up at the statue of Christopher Columbus pointing out to sea around noon. He found me without any issues – with his sweet wife and 15-month-old daughter in tow. We parked the car near the water and enjoyed a leisurely stroll along the pathway next to the beach (which is apparently a “clothing optional” destination). It was sunny and warm and so many people were out enjoying it! We walked for about an hour and half before heading to the restaurant for lunch. We enjoyed paella and other goodies with a lovely view of the water. This is one of the amazing benefits of working at Nestlé headquarters…meeting people from all over the world. My teammate works in Vevey during the week, but lives with his family in Barcelona on the weekends. It was wonderful to get to spend Sunday afternoon with some locals. And it was really fun to hang out with their little girl, who is exactly one week younger than my nephew!

To culminate a delightful weekend, I thought I would keep with tradition. For the past several years, I’ve had a facial during my birthday month and my ½ birthday month. (Yes, we celebrate ½ birthdays in my family, and yes, a ½ birthday card from my mama was in my mailbox when I arrived home this evening. My ½ birthday is tomorrow, so she was right on time.) I opted to have my facial at the Bliss Spa at the W Hotel before heading to the airport for my evening flight. I still think Fluffy at Ginger Bay in Kirkwood, Missouri is the best, but this was a good back up. And, it was a great way to sit still and relax before the start of another week.
Oh, Barcelona, thanks for the warm welcome to Spain! Thanks for the sunshine, the good food, the warm hospitality, and for so much incredible culture!
