This is the eighth World Cup in my lifetime…assuming they’ve actually taken place every four years. I actually don’t know enough to know whether or not they ever skipped one. Prior to moving to Europe, I think I watched one World Cup game ever. It started around 4:00am, and Senegal was playing someone. (2001, maybe?) My friends had just returned from 4.5 years of missionary work in Senegal, and they were so excited to watch them play. They didn’t have cable tv, so my dad hosted the 4:00am viewing party…and purchased Senegal gear for us to wear, of course. Aside from that, I don’t think I ever watched a game.
Fast forward to this year when I’m living in Europe. In a country who’s playing in the World Cup. Surrounded by three other countries who are playing. AND surrounded by expats from all over the world who are cheering for their respective countries. I was bound to watch at least one game. I watched two. It started with the US / Germany game last Thursday and ended with the US / Belgium game last night.
While those of you in the US are trying to find the best way to play hookie, so you can watch the games, I am staying up WAY too late to watch them. Last night, I didn’t get home from watching until 1:15am (thank you, overtime).

Sporting our red, white & blue!
It started to rain in overtime, but that didn’t stop us!
I still don’t really get all of the rules. I desperately need them to score more to keep me entertained. And, I still call it soccer. However, I have to admit that it’s been fun to see the passion flying (in the form of flags) all over Vevey!
