I typically shy away from all things GroupOn (and the other sites who are like it) after a bad experience trying to redeem a coupon a couple of years ago in St. Louis. But, when I was at American Thanksgiving in November, some new friends told me about a local discount site that sends some really good coupons…BuyClub.ch. The example they gave me was for the best burger place in Lausanne. Typically, the burgers cost 20 CHF (nearly $22 USD). However, BuyClub.ch sends coupons for “Buy One, Get One” burgers, which brings the cost down to an appropriate amount.
Last week, BuyClub sent a similar offer, but it was for burrito meals at a relatively new restaurant – Burrito Brothers. This is as close to Chipotle as Switzerland gets, so it is VERY exciting! A few of us bought coupons, and my Barnacle & I planned to go last night. Sadly, the coupon voucher didn’t come through in time, and it didn’t really make sense to go without it. We were so bummed!
Switzerland isn’t really conducive to a change of plans. People are very planned, and reservations are a must…especially for the good places. It was a gorgeous night, and we wanted to be outside. She suggested that we could do what we always do…have a picnic. I told her that I’ve actually never had a picnic here, but that I would be up for it. Within a few minutes, I was packing up my picnic basket with my Miami blanket, plates, cups, napkins, drinks, and the little bit of transportable food I had in the house – mostly cheese & crackers and chocolate. (Proof that I’m becoming Swiss?) We stopped at the grocery store along the way to pick up a lot of other goodies, and then headed for the lake to meet our friends.
For being so impromptu, it turned out to be a fabulous night. There were about a dozen of us, and of course, SO MUCH FOOD! We enjoyed a GORGEOUS sunset sitting in the grass along the lake near the fork and Charlie Chaplain statues. We sat out eating and laughing for hours. No frills – just a laid back evening with my Swiss family. A perfect way to ease into the weekend!
[Biggest baguette I’ve ever seen!]
[Do you think we have enough food?!]
[Would you believe that this crew ate at least 3/4 of this huge loaf of bread?]
And of course, guess what was waiting in my Inbox as I walked back to my apartment? The voucher for Burrito Brothers! I guess it will have to wait for another day. And in the end, I think I’m glad about that.
