I experienced one of the most phenomenal things yesterday. Okay, in reality, it doesn’t compare to the Alps or a lot of the other spectacular things I’ve seen since moving to Europe. But for someone who loves to try and recreate aspects of American life here in Switzerland, the American Market in Nyon is one of the best things I’ve found! My friend and I spent at least an hour ooh-ing and aah-ing over everything available in the store. Mind you, almost none of it was healthy, but it’s good to know where to go for a taste of America when it’s needed. (And thankfully, it’s a 40-45 minute drive from Vevey to keep me from going too often.)
So many treasures…Double Stuf Oreos, Cream of Mushroom soup, Mountain Dew, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Yankee Candles, PAM Cooking Spray, microwavable popcorn, beef jerky, almost all of the ingredients needed for Thanksgiving dinner, oatmeal, cake mixes, icing, brownie mix, graham crackers, goldfish crackers, Pop Tarts, Lucky Charms…I could go on and on! It was an amazing treasure hunt!
Now, you pay for this. One can of Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom soup was nearly $5 USD. A small can of PAM Cooking Spray was around $12 USD. And cake mixes? Most were $8-10 USD. My can of A&W Cream Soda was $3 USD. But, desperate times call for desperate measures, and I would argue that it was worth every franc.
My friend and I meandered through Old Town Nyon after our shopping spree and were surprised to see that the Swiss are fully supportive of Movember, too.
We ate a delicious lunch by the lake – Perch & Frites. (The Swiss version of fish & chips.) A perfect way to wrap up an exciting outing to the American Market! And as a bonus, it only cost 2 CHF to park for about three hours! We both anticipated something much more, so that was a fun surprise!
