Last year, I was traveling for nearly all of Montreux Jazz Festival. I made it to Jazz on the Train with a friend, but none of the events in Montreux. I was sad to miss out on a lot of good music, but I was not sad to miss the sogginess. It rained so much!
This year, it’s not raining, but it is HOT! I made sure to buy tickets to one of the concerts in the Stravinski Auditorium, so I could experience the event. There are a lot of big name artists performing this year (John Legend, Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga, Mary J. Blige, Toto, Aloe Blacc…to name a few), but I opted to see Damien Rice with some friends.
Montreux is all about the festival right now. The pathway along the lake is full of food stands, makeshift bars & lounges built out over the water, and vendors selling all kind of festival tchotchkes.
There are a couple of paid concert venues, but there are also multiple places to watch free performances. Music is everywhere!
When we entered the main auditorium tonight, a couple of things made me laugh:
Free tampons for when the music is too loud!
And, instructions about what’s allowed inside the auditorium – basically, smiles and nothing else!
We missed the opening act, but we caught the end of the second performer. His name was Nils Frahm, and he introduced me to Modern Classical. And I didn’t like it. (Though one of his pieces reminded me of Toccata by Khachaturian, which I performed on my senior piano recital.)
Needless to say, we were all very excited when it was time for Damien Rice to perform! He was impressive!
Hooray for live music! Such a treat! I guess you could say Switzerland redeemed itself after yesterday.
