When girlfriends tell you they’re coming to Europe…AND when they tell you that they’re visiting a country that’s been on your list for a while, you rearrange your schedule to join them! Two of the ladies who came to visit me last summer for a weekend in the Alps and another weekend in France were coming back! This time, our rendezvous took place in Croatia!
Since I can’t imagine my mama being the only person who doesn’t know where to find Croatia on a map, here is a snapshot to help you get your bearings (and to see the cities we visited):
Croatia has been around for centuries, but a quick tidbit of recent history for those who (like me) don’t know much about this part of the world…Croatia gained its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.
Geography and history aside, now we can talk about how beautiful Dubrovnik is! In fact, it’s so beautiful that I don’t really have anything else to say, since you really just have to see it to believe it. When I met the girls at our apartment, I was immediately blown away by the view!
It was crazy hot, but we made our way into Old Town walking through the adorable streets…
We headed to Buza II – a bar built into the side of the cliff. We attempted to cool off with a couple of drinks (albeit, unsuccessfully) while enjoying the view and watching the crazies jump off of boulders into the sea. Allegedly, this is where Bill Gates hangs out when he is in Dubrovnik, but we didn’t see him (or anyone famous for that matter).
Just before sunset, we were ready to walk the town walls – the best attraction in Dubrovnik. It’s a 1.25 mile walk, and it’s the best way to take in the beautiful city, the sea, and the oh-so-many orange rooftops! Here is a glimpse of our views as we circled the city:
We ended the evening eating seafood at Lokanda Peskarija. Outdoor seating near the water on a steamy evening definitely felt like summertime! What a great start to our Croatian adventure! I now understand why Dubrovnik gets the title, “the Pearl of the Adriatic.” It definitely deserves it!
