August 1 is Swiss National Day – a day that celebrates the founding of the Swiss Confederation in 1291. The importance for an American living in Switzerland? Fireworks!! Many of the towns have firework displays, and because Vevey is situated on the lake, we get to see all of the firework shows taking place in the towns all along (and across) the lake! I bet we caught a glimpse of 8-10 different shows – several of which took place in Vevey and the towns next door! My camera didn’t do a great job of capturing them, but we had a front row seat on my balcony both Friday & Saturday nights.
On Saturday morning, there were TONS of boats out on the lake. There must have been some sort of race or regatta or something happening!
And of course, the American crew had to get together to celebrate, too. We had a BBQ complete with Swiss décor and watched the fireworks. It was a fun (and hilarious) night as we mourned the end of Ben Afflek and Jennifer Garner’s marriage and discovered that one of these lovely ladies is my birthday twin!! (We immediately started plotting potential ideas for our birthday celebration. One of which is to invite Julia Roberts to join us, since she’s our birthday twin!) I am so grateful for the laughter that is generated when we’re together, and I’m grateful to Switzerland for giving us reason to celebrate!
