On Swiss National Day, several expat friends came over to celebrate. Our conversation spun out of control as we started talking about all of the recent celebrity breakups. Maybe the others keep up better than I do, but I’m always finding out about things months after the fact. When you aren’t bombarded by People magazine and US Weekly in the checkout line at the grocery store, you forget about a lot of characters. Anyway…I digress.
Somehow during this conversation, I mentioned one of my “fun facts.” I said something about Julia Roberts being my Birthday Twin. One of my friends let out something between a squeal and a scream when she asked, “Is your birthday October 28th?!” I answered, ‘yes,” and she continued to squeal, “that’s MY birthday!” Utter chaos broke out at that moment. A mixture of laughter, screaming, and oh-so-many questions. After all, we’ve been here for roughly a year and a half together. How did this never come up?!?!?
Well, we immediately started concocting a plan of how we should celebrate our birthday. And of course, we wanted to include Julia in this celebration. The dialogue continued over the next couple of weekends including planning how and where we should celebrate, discovering the six degrees of separation between Julia and us, and plotting how we would invite her to join us.
The party planning was the easy part. We would host a Julia Roberts themed costume party! Everyone had to wear costumes inspired by a Julia Roberts character or movie.
As for the six degrees of separation, we have some colleagues at Nespresso who work with George Clooney (a spokesperson for Nespresso) and George knows Julia. But, the professional connection didn’t seem to be the best path to Julia. However, the day after sending out the party invitations, one of the girls from my Connect Group told me that her aunt was college roommates with Julia’s sister. WHAT?!?!?!?!?!? I asked if she was okay to send Julia an invitation via her aunt. She agreed, and we sent a note to Julia introducing her to Vevey, to ourselves, and to our party idea.
Birthdays are always wonderful. This one was no exception. Between two bouquets of flowers, presents, a homemade dinner courtesy of my house guests, and loads of cards, texts, facebook messages, and emails, I was feeling the love. But, it got even better when I put on a wig and a fancy dress and went to KJU to celebrate with my Birthday Twin and about 25 of our friends…as Joanne Herring from Charlie Wilson’s War!!

A sweet Miami friend was here visiting in August, and she witnessed one of the Julia party brainstorms. She made this incredible card for me (and Julia), which I absolutely love! Outside of my birthday letter from President George W. Bush in 2007, it’s one of the best birthday cards I’ve ever received.
My Birthday Twin and I were really optimistic that Julia was going to appear last night. Even though she didn’t, we had a wonderful evening and a lot of laughs. I hope Julia, Bill Gates, Joaquin Phoenix, Brad Paisely, the St. Louis Arch, and the seven or eight other Birthday Twins I know enjoyed their day as much as we did! I’m sure stories about this evening will come up on all future birthdays…and I’ll know that will always make me smile!
