I am a third generation fan of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. My dad grew up listening to games on the radio with my grandpa when they lived in Nashville, Tennessee. When I was young, we went to see the Cardinals play in Pittsburgh nearly every time they were in town. Then, of course, there were periodic trips to St. Louis to see them play at Busch Stadium – first the old stadium and now the current one.
I’ve spent 4.5 years of my adult life in St. Louis living a short walk from the stadium. I became a regular – attending roughly a dozen games a season (and watching many more on TV). You know you’re a regular when you know the walk up songs for the entire team and have favorite food stands. To date, my most exciting Cardinals moment was being present for Game 6 & 7 of the 2011 World Series!
As you can imagine, watching sports games live is virtually impossible when living in Europe unless you’re willing to give up sleep. That, and you have to be saavy enough technologically to find ways to actually stream the games. (For those keeping track, I’m not that advanced.) Thankfully, the guys in my world are. And thankfully, one of them is a Cubs fan. (Let’s be clear…I’m sad for him, but I am happy he had a vested interest in the series.)
My friend agreed to let me watch Game 1 of the playoffs at his place. The game started at 12:45am in Switzerland, which was really painful. But thankfully, we both stayed awake for the whole thing, and…the Cardinals won 4-0!!
I haven’t seen a baseball game since I went to one in St. Louis last fall, and I have to say, it was good for my soul to watch a game. I know it’s very American, but I really love baseball!
The best statistic shared during the game? “73% of teams who win Game 1 go on to win the World Series.” I like those odds! Here’s hoping for an exciting October and a 12th World Series victory!
