The past two years (2013 and 2014), I spent Christmas Eve at the home of some dear expat friends. They moved away this summer, and I knew it was time to step up and host this year. There’s always some expats who choose to stay in Europe over the holidays. And let’s face it…no one wants to celebrate alone!
We woke up to a gorgeous sunrise on Christmas Eve morning…
…and saw a spectacular sunset in the evening!
My mama was happy to co-host, since she typically hosts on Christmas Eve anyway. She brought some special ingredients from the U.S., and she even brought us some Christmas flare to wear for the evening!
We don’t necessarily have traditional food on Christmas Eve. We just prepared a variety of appetizers and desserts to share!
We played a game (where everyone won one of my mama’s gingerbread men)…
Of course, I got too excited and forgot to take pictures with everyone, but these were the final guests to leave!
On Christmas Day, we opened presents (yes, Santa comes to Switzerland)!
And then, we walked up the hill to enjoy a meal at my colleague’s home! They just had a baby last month, so they stayed in Switzerland this year. Isn’t he adorable?!
I’m so thankful for my Swiss family. The collection of people has looked different every year, but each celebration has been wonderful in its own way. I’m also glad my mom has been able to experience two Christmases in Switzerland with me.
