All week I was thinking of California Dreamin’ as the title of this blog post. Guess what song was playing on the rental car shuttle at LAX?!? How’s that for confirmation?!
I flew to Los Angeles on Tuesday to work in the Nestlé USA office this week. I was co-leading a workshop as well as meeting with a number of other folks while I was in town. Believe it or not, it was my first time in the Glendale office!
The flight from Paris to LA is 11.5 hours. When you add in an hour or so for boarding and de-icing, it’s a doozy!! Despite my exhaustion, I hit the ground running by meeting the team for dinner. I asked for sushi, and they definitely delivered!
Before working in Vevey, I didn’t know anyone at Nestlé USA. With the Purina headquarters in a different city, there’s not much opportunity to meet those from the other offices. But thanks to my assignment in Switzerland, I now know loads of people there! On Wednesday, we had a Vevey reunion dinner at BJ’s in Pasadena (where I had a huge entrée salad – something I miss in Switzerland). Three of us were in town from other Nestlé locations, so it was extra fun to be together!
On Thursday night, I had tacos at Diablo Taco with a friend who just moved back to LA a couple of weeks ago. They were delicious!! I even tried a brussel sprout taco. (For the record, I ate a lot of brussel sprouts this week. They seem to be obsessed here!!)
After finishing my work on Friday, I headed to San Diego for a weekend with Vevey friends who moved back to the U.S. in October. On the way, I stopped and see the Grill Master’s old stomping grounds in Manahattan Beach.
On Saturday, we had a delicious American breakfast complete with eggs & bacon!! We went for a walk and enjoyed their lovely outdoor patio. In the afternoon, we headed to La Jolla in search of sea lions!! Now, if you’re a non-Spanish speaker like me, you might be interested to know that La Jolla is pronounced La Hoya. I didn’t know and pronounced it like it sounds!! Rookie mistake!!
We had dinner at Puesto, which was delicious!! Fish tacos are my fave! It was so great to spend a relaxing weekend catching up with these friends and enjoying America with them and their little nugget (who is PRECIOUS!!!!).
Before leaving San Diego, I had a morning coffee at Mystic Mocha with my freshman RA and her boyfriend. I saw her about three years ago, so I was thrilled to have some quality time with her. She’s a gem!
In keeping with the Miami University theme, I also met up with a friend for brunch in LA. We went to The Tasting Kitchen in Venice where he introduced me to Chicken & Waffles – something I’ve known about but never tried. (If you have any doubt, rest assured that it’s delicious!!)
I came to Los Angeles several times in high school, but wrote it off due to traffic. This was my first visit in 15 or 16 years, and it was a great week. Traffic wasn’t bad, and I must say, the palm trees and sunshine are incredible (particularly on a weekend when the Eastern U.S. is snowed in!). Hopefully, I’ll be back again soon!
