I grew up in a home that made a big deal out of birthdays. Since I was pretty young, sending birthday cards to others has been one of my trademarks. I love the celebrations associated with birthdays, and thanks to social media, it’s now a day that I get to hear from friends from every life stage. A few still send cards via snail mail, which I love. 🙂
This year, I implemented a new rule – taking the day off work to celebrate my birthday! It was such a fun day…Chick-fil-a breakfast, a facial, and downtime to field the hundreds of messages that were coming all day long. The day even ended with a FaceTime call from China, which was such a fun surprise!
Don’t worry; I didn’t spend my entire birthday alone. A couple of weeks earlier, a friend asked what I was doing to celebrate. I told her I didn’t know, but that I wanted to do something. In the end, we decided my house would be the venue on the night of my birthday, but that my friends would take care of coordinating everything else. They did such a great job! There were about 15 of us, and it was a chill night full of laughter. The Happy Birthday Song was sung in about three different languages, which made my heart oh-so-happy. I’m grateful for old and new St. Louis friends who came together to celebrate with me!
[Hopefully, the video below will actually play, so you can hear a couple versions of the Happy Birthday Song. The filming stopped before a couple of them started singing in Chinese.]
[I probably haven’t done this since posing for pictures before a high school dance, but it seemed only natural for us to pose on the steps for a group photo.]
[One of my friends was charged with bringing a “Happy Birthday” sign. Those who gave her this task were meaning for her to bring a sign like the one on the left (which I already owned). Her interpretation of the request is the sign on the right. We laughed about this all evening, but her masterpiece is now on display in my laundry room. I’m glad there was a miscommunication.]
For those of you who remember me celebrating with my Birthday Twin last year…she sent me picture of beautiful Vevey on the morning of our birthday. Wish we could’ve celebrated together again this year, but it would’ve been a really long flight to pop over for the evening. She sent a box of wonderful things from Switzerland earlier in the week, so I was definitely feeling the love.
Can you believe it’s been THREE YEARS since I arrived in Switzerland (and started blogging)?!
